Ghana is a great nation. Like many other African countries, we have been endowed with vast vegetation, beautiful rivers and natural resources; gold, coffee, cocoa, oil and diamonds. Yet we are still poor. After 61 years of Independence, we still 'beg' for funds and our systems are been controlled by the very people we sought freedom from. As W.H. Auden stated thousands have lived without love, not one without water yet some parts of the county still lack portable and clean water. Accra is still faced with rationing of water.
Our children, the future leaders have their heads buried in books with no access to recreational facilities for relief and relaxation. Of which the malls have now turned into a playground for them on vacation for those in Accra and Kumasi. Forgetting those outside the cities. A breakdown of the family system due to poverty and unemployment had steered streetism, arm robbery, beggars on the streets and prostitution.
Filthy Capital, Indiscipline,Corruption
Accra the capital of our country is filled with chunks and huge chunks of filth. Because it’s the duty of some poor cleaner so if I don’t litter he/she has no work some say. That is utter foolishness! Is this the Ghana Osayefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the Big Six fought for? Hmmm! They will look at us from above and shake their heads because it seems we have failed.
We live in a country where majority of of us regardless of our educational level know right from wrong yet we are an indiscipline people. Most of us sing the nation anthem of a "better Ghana", the Government’s work yet they have failed us.
The most favorite and last words of every politician after disasters caused by our own negligence are “Never Again”. They turn motivational speakers, obviously that’s what there are best at doing. They are sending us a message, we as citizens create the problems due to our indiscipline and expect them to solve them when they aren't magicians but a matter of commonsense. Whilst it is easier to point fingers boldly at Politicians for being corrupt, individuals in Government institutions have a hidden agenda of getting their share of the national cake. Money leaks into individuals pocket and not projects. Is this Patriotism?

Gender Inequality
After 61 years, women, who make up more than 51% of Ghana’s population and even birthed the rest of the population; still have all forms of violence perpetuated against them, Female Genital Mutilation, Child Marriage and still relegate to the back. Gender inequality still exists in our churches, work places and families. A story is been told of a woman who was asked by her family to resign from taking up a political role because her brother in law was contesting for the same position. Eiiii Ghana! Does this even make sense at all? When a woman works her way to the top it is often synonymous to sexual favors, protocol and not her capabilities and hard work. Hmmm! And on every 6th of March, we gather gallantly dressed to celebrate this Independence!
A Long Way to Go
Just take a moment and reflect on this even as we celebrate the day.
Indeed we may be independent from colonial rule but we aren't independent from the issues that bedevil us as a Nation. It’s time for us to change our attitudes and mindset. Nation building is for you, you, me and everybody out there. Together we will build the Osayefo and the Big Six Ghana which reflects on the theme for this year's celebration : Ghana beyond Aid.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
